| Sir Isaac Newton wrote what has become one of the most influential books of physics of all time, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), published in 1687, and often referred to as the "Principia". He advanced and defined the Laws of Motion, applied his dynamics to explaining lunar motion and the tides among other natural phenomena, and advanced the understanding of gravity, and developed the calculus (which was also independently developed by Leibnitz). |
